Life After Graduation: Financial Tips for New Grads
In Part 1 of the Life After Graduation Series, we’ll list some of the financial literacy skills you’ll need as you embark on your next adventure.
It’s February, and graduation season will be upon us before we know it. Over years of working with students getting ready to graduate, I’ve witnessed the excitement — and fear — that people experience when approaching this major milestone. It is so exciting to think about taking the next step and exploring a whole new world of opportunities. But being fully financially independent is new for some graduates, making it difficult to understand how to move forward.
It costs a lot to live. While in school, it is often easy to think about moving to far away locales to start a new career and a new life. But as graduation creeps up, the cold, hard reality of the cost of living becomes clear. How will I pay to move away from my school or my home? How will I afford rent? Do I need roommates? What about transportation? The list goes on and on.
I’ve found that building financial literacy skills helps quell some of these fears. Over the next few weeks, I will focus on key financial literacy skills necessary to plan your next steps past graduation. Based on the questions I received in my classes, I’ll cover credit, budgeting (I’m usually allergic to that term, but I do think it fits here), saving money, insurance, and taxes. I’ll also provide techniques to build your confidence as you embark on your next step. As a Certified Financial Education Instructor℠ (CFEI®), I’m here to give you general information on how to build your financial literacy. However, it is important to remember that everybody’s situation is unique, and this information is not a substitute for advice provided by a financial advisor or other financial professional familiar with your needs.
In the next installment of our Life After Graduation series, we’ll discuss credit. In the meantime, don’t forget to enjoy this exciting time in your life. Finishing school is a monumental achievement and something to be genuinely proud of!
